The causes of the recent situation are an active field of research. The scientific reason is that the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases due to human activity has caused most of the warming observed since the start of the polluted area and the observed warming cannot be satisfactorily explained by natural causes alone. This attribution is clearest for the most recent 50 years, which is the period when most of the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations took place and for which the most complete measurements exist.
Often people are so consumed with the hectic lifestyle that today provides them that they do not take the time to even think about next week, let alone future generations. A simple look out the window or a walk outside once in a while is all it takes to see what almost all of us take for granted – breathable air and vegetation (unless you live in the desert). These things are in jeopardy for future generations unless we start acting on it now.
If things continue to unfold on the same path we have charted as of today, we are setting ourselves up to be remembered as the generation that ruined the Earth. It will not take much to change the course; we just need to act sooner than later to ensure that the path is changed in time to alter the dire environmental fate that will be the burden of future generations.
We will Choose Free Will
We at Global Carbon Care have faith in the general goodness and want of mankind to care for and respect the planet we all share. We are also not naïve to the fact that a voluntary carbon offset is not high on the list of priorities for those without the means to do so.
Global Carbon Care is not about promoting guilt, remorse, or punishment for the ills that society has dealt the planet. Some of the environmental problems we are experiencing today were perpetuated through many parallel series of events initiated hundreds of years ago. It has only been in very recent history that we have begun to understand what has happened and why.
Global Carbon Care is all about giving people the ability to exercise their free will and choose whether or not they wish to be part of the solution to the destructive global effects of carbon emissions. It is all about making a decision to help the cause or to ignore it.
Additionally: Sustainability
This simply means, will the benefits of the project or program be ongoing. Global Carbon Care is not interested in funding projects where there is a one-time benefit, and then the end user reverts back to the old, more damaging activity. We review the details of the projects GCC chooses to put funds behind through our partners. This ensures that we are getting the greatest benefit possible for the funds being directed.
Types of Projects
Greenhouse Gas Reduction: these projects involve the implementation of household, business, and community processes that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the air. Examples include everything from cleaner burning stoves for villages to implementation of more advanced industrial filtration systems to reduce or eliminate factory emissions.
Sequestration: refers to the provision of long-term storage of carbon in vegetation, underground, or the oceans so that the buildup of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere will reduce or slow. Examples include forestation programs and emission diversion.
Tips to Reduce your Carbon Footprint
We have put a few ideas together for you to consider while on your quest to live a carbon neutral lifestyle, operate a carbon neutral business, or just be generally nicer to the environment.
Lighting/electricity
- Switch to low-energy light bulbs or LED lighting.
- Turn off lights and equipment when not in use.
- Installing motion sensors or timer switches.
- Invest in a CHP system so you have the ability to generate some of your own electricity.
- Check your use of electricity, gas and oil, so you know how much energy your office uses and how much you can reduce.
Transportation
- Maintain the correct tire pressure to reduce fuel consumption.
- Consider using alternatives to fossil fuels like biodiesel, LPG and electricity. Go hybrid, otherwise.
- Work with suppliers to improve efficiency and cut carbon emissions by reducing the frequency of deliveries.
Water
- Deal promptly with dripping taps and costly leaks.
- Get water-efficient toilets, showerheads and faucets.
- When at a hotel reuse your towels
- Before ordering a bottle of water, ask if they offer filtered tap water.
- Consider reusing waste water for water plants or to flush toilets. Systems are available to harvest rain water for outside use or to flush toilets.
Heating/air conditioning.
· Consider using alterative energy sources (i.e. solar or wind power).
· Ensure that all future home or business are the most energy efficient on the market.
· Ensure that boilers are serviced annually to improve efficiency.
Waste
- Recycle to reduce less landfill and lower disposal costs.
- Incorporate the use of balers and compactors.
- Be sure to compost food waste if you do not have a municipal program in place for biodegradable waste.
- Re-use old envelopes by sticking a label over the previous address.
- Use both sides of the paper when printing or photocopying.
- If you cannot reuse paper, use recycled.
Source locally
- Buy food from local sources
- Purchase office equipment and supplies from local companies whenever possible. Building design
- Many low-cost ways to improve a building’s efficiency exist, like improving insulation.
- Window coverings and reflective window glazes are also good options.
Training
- The key to any good community or business carbon reduction (or environmental) program is good training.
- Make sure all employees or citizens are properly educated on the processes in place and the importance of following the mandate.
- Post reminders at typical sources of waste – sinks, garbage cans, doorways, light switches, printers, etc…
- Encourage staff to commit to taking alternative modes of transportation for their daily commute.
